Tips for Using Long Tail Keywords
Long tail keywords are keywords combined to create phrases that people are likely to search for. For example, a graphic designer might try to rank for long tail keywords like “affordable graphic design” or “graphic design for small businesses on a budget.”
There are four ways to utilize long tail keywords:
1) Include them in your meta description. Your meta description is what search engines pick up first and display to potential visitors. A good example for a graphic designer would be, “Designs By Les Graphic Design for small businesses on a budget. Affordable graphic design in Wilmington, DE. Call 302-555-555 for your free quote.” Search engines use a maximum 160 characters description, including spaces, so choose your words carefully.
2) Use them in your blog posts. Make a list of phrases you are targeting and include them in your posts. Weave them naturally into the body copy of your post. Designs By Les might start a blog post with the sentence, “I recently completed a website design for XYZ Company and they were thrilled that I could provide affordable graphic design that fit the budget for their small business.” The exact order of the words is not as important as working the keywords into the copy in a way reads well. Stick to one or two long tail keywords for every 300 words of content.
3) Create pages for your website that utilize long tail keywords. You can easily include long tail keywords on your about and/or services page. Your goal is to gain search engine credibility based on your business/service’s strongest points. Pick your strengths and use them as long tail keywords on your static pages as well.
4) Build links with your long tail keywords. Every time you post a link on another website, use one of your keyword phrases. For a blog comment, you could fill out the name field as Designs By Les – Affordable Graphic Design. Make sure that your comment or post is relevant to the site you are posting on. Irrelevant or generic comments are considered keyword-stuffing spam.
Using long tail keywords requires some finesse and planning, but the results will create significant connections to your website. Long tail keywords are a great way to let people know what you do best and boost your visibility when they are searching for a specific service.
